Healthy Evening Snacks That Satisfy Cravings Without Ruining Sleep
When the late-night munchies hit but you don't want something greasy that'll mess with your sleep, you've got more options than you think. I've tried a lot of combinations over the years—here are the ones that actually work.
Quick, no-fuss picks
Dark chocolate with a few dried apricots and a cup of herbal tea is my personal go-to. One square of 86% dark chocolate runs about 60 calories; add three dried apricots and the sweet craving usually fades—without the cloying sugar rush of milk chocolate. The tea helps you wind down, which makes this a solid pre-bed combo.
Nut butter is a lazy-night lifesaver. Scoop a spoonful of almond or cashew butter straight from the fridge—cold, the texture is thicker and creamier, and you get a hit of unsaturated fat while you're at it. Want it to feel more like dessert? Sprinkle a few dark chocolate chips on top. Tastes indulgent, but the calorie hit stays modest.

Cottage cheese with fruit is another regular for me. Dice up peaches, strawberries, or whatever's in season, fold them into cottage cheese, and season with a little vanilla, cinnamon, honey, or maple syrup. You get protein and fiber, real satiety, and it won't leave you too stuffed to fall asleep.
When you want something a little more substantial
A peanut-butter yogurt cup works like a mini dessert. Layer Greek yogurt on the bottom, add a spoonful of nut butter, and top with dark chocolate shavings. It scratches the peanut-butter-cup itch, but the protein count is way higher.
Roasted chickpeas are hard to stop eating once you make them. Toss with cumin, chili powder, and a drizzle of olive oil, then roast until crisp—about 120 calories per serving. I always end up going back for a few more.

Other snacks you can throw together in minutes
Apple slices with cashew butter: I like to mix pumpkin seeds, coconut flakes, chia seeds, and cinnamon into the butter for extra texture—and cinnamon has a mild wind-down effect some people swear by.
Toast spread with pistachio butter and topped with peach slices; or cube cheddar and apple and sandwich them between whole-grain crackers. Either way, you're done in a few minutes.
Sweet corn chaat is another five-minute option: warm corn kernels tossed with diced tomato, red onion, cilantro, a squeeze of lime, and a pinch of chaat masala or chili powder. Light, savory, and oddly more satisfying than chips.

Cranberry-pistachio energy balls—tahini or nut butter as the base, rolled into bite-size balls. Grab one or two when hunger strikes; easy portion control, no mindless grazing.
What these all have in common: a mix of protein, healthy fats, and fiber—enough to satisfy your mouth, not enough to keep you awake. The real trick is finding a few options you actually enjoy. Once you do, the habit sticks on its own.
